Community Success Story: Environmental Incentive Program

Posted in: ELNews | 0

Our final Environment Week Community Success Story is courtesy of Raene Barber, Sustainability Engineer with the Waste and Environment team at the City of Lethbridge, who explains the importance of the new Environmental Incentives Program:

Please describe the water rebates program
The Environmental Incentive Program offers rebates for purchasing rain barrels and replacing, old inefficient toilets with new low-flow toilets. The initiative is part of the Water Conservation Plan and Strategy approved by City Council in April 2024. Each household can get up to two rebates for low-flow toilets and two for rain barrels. For both items, the rebate covers 50% of the cost, up to $100 each.

Why is it important?
Installing and using rain barrels or installing low flow toilets are simple ways to reduce your water use. It’s also something you do once and then don’t really have to think about it again (e.g. you install a low flow toilet and use less water every time you flush, you don’t have to think about it again).
These rebates are important because they encourage residents to conserve water and make environmentally responsible decisions. The program is a great way for people to take action at home and be a part of a larger solution.
Climate predictions indicate that Lethbridge will experience hotter and drier summers into the future, with drought being a high climate risk. The rebate program encourages residents to be water conscious!

What makes this project a success for Lethbridge?
This is something the public has been asking for! Within the first two weeks of the program launch, we have already received over 90 applications to the rebate program. Successful applicants will see a reduction on their water utility bill.
The 2024 public survey on water conservation in Lethbridge showed overwhelming support for these rebates.

How can people get involved?
Residents can apply and find more information on the Environmental Incentive Program website.
