We are very pleased to welcome Nikki Hort as a practicum student from the University of Lethbridge’s School of Public Health who will be working with us until December. To get to know her better, we had some questions:
How long have you lived in Lethbridge?
I started living in Lethbridge when I first started University, back in 2012. To date I have lived here for five years.
Why did you choose to volunteer with Environment Lethbridge?
I wanted to start a practicum at Environment Lethbridge because I was interested in learning more about how human health and the environment come together and interact with one another. I find there is a lack of education and offered courses surrounding the environment at the university, so having a chance to work with Environment Lethbridge will allow me that extra knowledge I am looking for.
How would you like to see Lethbridge be more sustainable?
I would like to see Lethbridge adopt and practice the use of organic composting/recycling. So much waste that Lethbridge sends to the landfill is compostable organics. If everyone had a compost and recycled properly bin we could become so much more sustainable as a community.
What’s your favorite book?
Favorite book is To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
The Straw, the Coal and the Bean in Grimm’s Fairy Tales is my favorite story
If you were a superhero, what powers would you have?
If I could have a super power I’d choose to transform into any animal. There would be so many possibilities and new experiences.
If you could go back in time, what one thing would you change?
If I could go back, I would change and create serious policies and regulations around mass production of goods, materials, as well as everyday living so everyone would have to manage themselves in a more sustainable, and environmentally friendly way. Littering, dumping, over hunting and destruction of natural resources would no longer happen at such an alarming rate.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
If I won the lottery I would start by paying off all my debts and any my family might have. I would continue my education and learn as much as I could.
Where is your favorite place in Lethbridge?
I would say my favorite place in Lethbridge is downtown where all the action and unique shops are located.
Describe your perfect Day
My perfect day would start by having a big fancy brunch with all my favorite breakfast foods. I would then go to the book store and spend a few hours wandering, looking at all the books. It would then involve either watching a horror movie or playing tabletop games with friends while enjoying buffalo wing chips.
