This year for Environment Week, we are highlighting environmental success stories from around Lethbridge. First is Coulee Clean-up, which has been organized by the Helen Schuler Nature Centre since 2008. Nature Centre Resource Development Coordinator Chelsea Sherbut shared what makes the program a success:
Please describe Coulee Clean-up
Coulee Clean-up is a volunteer conservation project coordinated by the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. The Clean-up aims to preserve and protect Lethbridge’s river valley environment by removing garbage and debris from natural areas. It began in 2008 in response to negative community feedback about garbage accumulating in what should be pristine landscapes.
Why is it important?
Garbage is devastating to the health and aesthetic of our ecosystem. Plants, mammals, birds, insects, fish, reptiles and amphibians found within our river valley depend on a healthy ecosystem for their survival.
What makes this project a success for Lethbridge?
In 2024, 1,027 volunteers removed 489 bags of garbage from 71 coulee areas! Participating in the Clean-up has become an annual tradition for many corporate and non-profit groups, youth groups, and families. Great news: volunteers who have participated for many years have let us know that the amount of garbage that they find out in the coulees has gone down substantially over time. Next time you enjoy a walk, run or bike ride in the river valley, think of the hundreds of volunteers who work hard to keep it natural and clean each year. Even better, consider signing up to clean a coulee with your friends and family!
